For SSC exams such as CGL, CHSL, MTS and GD, the online form asks you to upload a scanned signature in JPEG/JPG format between 10 KB and 20 KB. SSC notices describe the signature as about 6.0 cm wide and 2.0 cm high. A normal phone photo is 2–5 MB, so it is far too big and the form will reject it.
Good news: you don't need an app or a cyber cafe. You can make a correct signature file in about two minutes, free, right in your browser.
Quick summary
- Format: JPG / JPEG
- File size: 10 KB to 20 KB
- Shape: about 6.0 × 2.0 cm (wide, short strip)
- Signature should be horizontal, clear and not blurred
What about the photo? In recent SSC application forms the photograph is captured live through your webcam or phone camera inside the form, so you usually don't upload a photo file. Read the notice for your exam to be sure.
Step 1: Sign on plain white paper
Use a black or dark blue pen and sign a little bigger than usual on clean white paper. Thin ball pens often look faint after compression, so a gel pen works better.
Step 2: Take a clear photo
Take the photo in daylight, holding the phone straight above the paper so there are no shadows. Don't use zoom; move closer instead.
Step 3: Crop it to a wide strip
Open the Image Cropper and crop tightly around the signature, leaving a small white margin. Aim for a shape about three times wider than it is tall, like 6 × 2 cm. Cropping removes empty paper, so more of the 20 KB goes into your actual signature.
Step 4: Compress it to under 20 KB
Open Compress Image to 20 KB and choose your cropped signature. The target is already set to 20 KB, so the tool finds the best quality that fits automatically. Tap Download.
If the result comes out below 10 KB, the signature image is too small or too plain. Make it bigger with the Image Resizer (for example 600 × 200 px), then compress again with the target set to 19 KB.
Step 5: Check before you upload
- The file name should end in .jpg
- The size shown after download is between 10 and 20 KB
- Open the file and zoom in: the signature should be clear, not blurry
Common reasons SSC rejects a signature
- Signature in capital letters or not your usual signature
- Blurred, very small or very faint signature
- File over 20 KB or under 10 KB
- Signature photo taken at an angle or with shadows
Requirements can change with each notification. Always check the official notice for your exam on ssc.gov.in before you submit. ToolSandook is not connected to SSC.
